Essex is lone survivor among area teams at state

The Northern Neck District sent five boys and girls basketball teams to the Group A playoffs last week, but Essex is the only district team still alive in the state tournament.

The Region A runner-up Trojans got past Region B champion Dan River, 52-49, in a boys Division 2 quarterfinal at Salem Civic Center last Saturday. Essex advances to a state semifinal game against Radford today (March 7) at 7 p.m. at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond. Radford is the Region C champion and took a 59-43 quarterfinal win over Virginia High.

A win in the semifinals will put Essex in the state championship game at the Siegel Center at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 9.

In the boys Division 2 tournament, Region B runner-up William Monroe beat Region A champion Northumberland, 74-44, in a quarterfinal at the Siegel Center last Friday.

In the girls tournament, Region A winner Lancaster lost 45-41 to Region B runner-up Clarke County at Old Dominion last Friday in a Division 2 quarterfinal.

On Saturday, Region B champion George Mason eliminated Region A runner-up Northumberland, 68-35, from the Division 2 tourney.

In the Division 1 girls tournament, Region B runner-up Altavista knocked out Region A champion Colonial Beach, 56-36.
