6,000 pounds of corn gleaned for food bank

Last Tuesday was gleaning day at Holyoke Farms near Lively. Volunteers from the Virginia Natural Resources Conservation Service, the United States Department of Agriculture and Healthy Harvest Food Bank pulled approximately 6,000 pounds of fresh corn.

Ronnie Forrester, who owns and operates Holyoke Farm with his family, planted three acres of sweet corn with the intention of sharing the yield with his neighbors and organizations such as Healthy Harvest Food Bank.

“It’s for a good cause. We’re happy to bear the cost and participate in the food bank’s agricultural program,” said Forrester.

This agricultural program is a partnership with local growers to allow volunteers to glean fresh produce from farmers’ fields. Within 48 hours, Healthy Harvest distributes this produce to 28 partnering pantries and feeding sites in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula…
