Area farmers win ribbons at State Fair of Virginia

The 2017 State Fair of Virginia recently concluded a 10-day run at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell.

Among area ribbon winners, Bruce Basye of Lottsburg placed fifth in the Open Crops and Vegetables competition for field corn best 10 ears. He also placed fourth in wheat.

Curtis Griffith of Callao placed third for peppers, hot, any other not listed smaller than 4 inches, 6 specimens.

Junior Brent of Lancaster placed second in the giant watermelon contest with a 131.6 pound entry and Corliss Brent placed fourth with a 110.4 pound entry.

In the Youth Crops and Vegetables competition, Carter Mitchell of Heathsville placed first in field corn best 10 ears, sixth in shelled corn, fifth in tallest stalk of corn with ear, first in youth hay mixed grass and third in soybeans on stalk.

Taylor Mitchell of Heathsville placed fourth in field corn best 10 ears, second in shelled corn, second in tallest stalk of corn with ear, second in youth hay mixed grass and fourth in soybeans on stalk.
