Blue Devils edge Red Devils, 3-1

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Mathews stole home twice in the sixth inning to clinch a 3-1 win over Lancaster last Thursday in a varsity baseball game during the Wells Fargo Advisors Invitational at Dream Fields in Kilmarnock.

The three-day tournament was changed to a two-day, Thursday and Friday, event because of forecasted rain and snow for last Saturday. The change meant Lancaster’s varsity baseball team played one game instead of two.

“Overall, the tournament was a great success and we were able to get 19 of the 26 games played,” said LHS coach and tournament organizer Welby Saunders. “It’s great for our community to have so many young people visit Lancaster County with their families. I’d like to thank the parents and volunteers who made the invitational a success and thank Wells Fargo Advisors for their continued support.”

The tournament included some 23 high school junior varsity and varsity baseball and softball teams.

On opening night, Mathews handed Lancaster’s varsity baseball team its first loss of the season. The Red Devils, 6-1 overall, begin Northern Neck District play this week…
