Two more county precincts counted;
outcomes remain unchanged, so far

by Audrey Thomasson

LANCASTER--Problems with voting machines from Tuesday’s election were ironed out Wednesday night for White Stone precinct 301 (firehouse) while voters at the Kilmarnock precinct 401 (rescue squad) will have to wait until Friday when poll workers from their precinct can reassemble to hand count ballots, according to voter registrar Peggy Harding.

However, Harding reported other problems emerged in District 1 where votes had to be recounted due to more glitches with the 15-year old machines.

The new counts followed county results posted in the Record on Thursday with all winners maintaining their leads.

Harding said the electoral board had to wait for permission from the State Board of Elections to open the malfunctioning hand-written ballot machines. She heard from the board late Wednesday.

Poll workers from White Stone counted ballots Wednesday night with unofficial results for precinct 301 following county and state trends. In the governor’s race, Republican Bob McDonnell garnered 459 to Democrat Creigh Deeds 208. In the lieutenant governer’s column, Republican Bill Bolling topped Democrat Jody Wagner 572 to 361. And for attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli easily won with 618 votes to Stephen Shannon’s 332 votes.

In the District 99 contest for House of Delegates, Democrat Albert Pollard remained in the lead, virtually shattering any hopes for his opponent, Republican Catherine Crabill to catch him, at 363 to 289 in favor of Pollard.

There were no races for supervisor or school board in White Stone.

A hand re-count of all ballots in District 1, precinct 101 at the Ruritan Club in Lively did not change the results of state or local elections.

Harding reported the ballot machine counted most hand written votes and ignored over 200 others. Adjusted numbers released by Harding in precinct 101 for the governor’s race were McDonnell 640 to Deeds 337. In the lieutenant governor’s race, Bolling had 572 votes to Wagner’s 361. Votes for attorney general adjusted for Cuccinelli to 457 to Shannon’s 203.

In the District 99 delegate’s race, Pollard increased his lead with 363 votes to Crabill’s 289.

Butch Jenkins remained the winner in the race for board of supervisor’s with 644 votes to Richard Pleasants’ 391. School board incumbent Carl Failmezger’s numbers jumped to 718 in the uncontested race.

Precinct 401 results are expected to be posted online at rrecord.com Friday afternoon.
