Charlotte M. E. Shelton

Charlotte M. E. Shelton

NORWALK, CALIF.—Charlotte Marie Edwards Shelton, 81, of Norwalk, Calif., passed from us on Saturday, September 15, 2018. Mrs. Shelton was born March 16, 1937, the daughter of Thomas Dorsey Edwards and Iona May (Noni) Elbourn Edwards, born and raised in Weems.

Charlotte became head matriarch of her family at the age of 16 when her mother passed away from cancer. She worked to provide for her younger siblings and take care of her father for years thereafter. It was this life event that lead to her passion and career in nursing. She was an outstanding caregiver to all she worked for and even those she did not, always ensuring people had care and were not forgotten. She, in later years, walked away from her career to care for her husband, Jessie Calvin Shelton, who was truly her soulmate and one true love.

Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Lisa Marie Shelton of Louisa and Charlene Iona Bequette of Norwalk, Calif.; brother, James Claude Edwards of Kilmarnock; two nephews, Jai Nitai Dasa (James Edwards) of England and Thomas “Tommy” Dorsey Edwards III of Maryland.

A memorial service will be planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, November 24, at Claybrook Baptist Church in Weems. The family, friends and Claybrook Church family will gather in Bussells Hall following the service.

Memorials may be made to Gesundheit! Institute, a free, full-scale hospital and health care eco-community, planned on 316 acres in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Their goal is to build a teaching center and clinic which will enable Gesundheit to see patients and teach health care design.
