District tournament games flooded out

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Rain, rain go away was the cry from high school players, coaches and administrators across the region last week as three days of storms brought a screeching halt to postseason baseball, softball and soccer play.

All of the Northern Neck District tournaments, including baseball, softball, boys soccer and girls soccer, were cancelled and not rescheduled.

Northern Neck District baseball and softball tournament semifinal games were in progress last Wednesday night when rains forced most to be called in the third or fourth innings. Play was supposed to resume Thursday but was again rained out. The championships had been scheduled for Friday.

According to LHS athletic director Dave Zeiler, the tournaments were cancelled to allow preparations for the start of Region A tournament games, which were scheduled to begin at high seed sites Wednesday, May 23. All regional tournaments must be completed by June 2.

The boys and girls soccer tournaments also under way were cancelled. Lancaster’s varsity boys played an early afternoon game last Wednesday and finished their semifinal with a 2-1 win over Northumberland.
