Fire strikes Grimes home

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

WHITE STONE—No one was injured Saturday night when a fire swept through the home of Melvin Grimes Sr., according to White Stone Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dan Sanders.

Grimes was not at home when the fire broke out at his house in the 1800 block of Mary Ball Road near White Stone.

The fire was reported by both a neighbor and a passing motorist at 8:40 p.m. When the fire department arrived, fire was showing from two bedroom windows on the east side of the residence.

It took about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control, with volunteers from White Stone, Upper Lancaster and Kilmarnock responding. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department and Kilmarnock EMS also responded, reported Sanders. The temperature at the time of the fire was in the single digits.

The source of the fire remains under investigation and the home received significant damage, he said.

“We were pretty fortunate this was [the only fire] we had during the storm,” he said.
