Gillie D. Carlton

FARNHAM—Gillie Daniel Carlton, 86, formerly of Alexandria passed away on January 25, 2017.

He was born on October 8, 1930, to Gillie and Ada Carlton in Glencoe, Ky. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, June A. Carlton; his six children, Joanne Tallant (Shawn), Jannine Pennell (Bill), Jennelle Traylor (Wayne), Richard Carlton (Lori), Robert Carlton (Gillian) and Justina Carlton (Mary); his eight grandchildren, Michael (Erin), Amanda (Steve), Kristin, Kathryn, Caitlin, Kelsey, Jourdan and Luc; and his two great-grandsons, Daniel and Cashton.

Mr. Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Carlton served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years. He retired in 1968 as a chief petty officer and served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He then worked as a flight programmer for NASA and was part of the mission that put the first man on the moon.

In 1988, Mr. Carlton retired from the federal government after working for U.S. Customs and Health and Human Services. He then drove a school bus for Fairfax County for 10 years.

Mr. Carlton was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family. Funeral services will be private at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice of Virginia or the River Road Food Pantry.

His family thanks the many caretakers at Commonwealth Senior Living at Farnham and Hospice of Virginia for making Mr. Carlton’s last days so comfortable.
