Kilmarnock Garden Club celebrates 50th anniversary

IRVINGTON—In September 1967, nine ladies with green thumbs met for the first time as the official Kilmarnock Garden Club (KGC). The club, now with 18 active members and two honorary members, celebrated its 50th anniversary September 19 at the Tides Inn in Irvington.

Of the original nine members, Virginia Kelly, Peggy Davis and Lillian Moore still reside in the area.

Guest speaker at the luncheon was National Garden Clubs president Nancy Hargroves. Distinguished guests included current and past members of the club, their guests, Kilmarnock mayor Mae Umphlett, Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs president Marty Bowers and Piedmont District Garden Club president Judy Durant.

At the conclusion of the program, Hargroves presented KGC president Grace Ann Miller a National Garden Club certificate and mayor Umphlett presented Miller a plaque and resolution from the Town of Kilmarnock.
