Lady Devils pick up a couple wins

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Lancaster battled through a couple of five-set varsity matches last week to pick up a Northern Neck District win over Essex and an upset of Tidewater District’s West Point.

Meanwhile, Washington & Lee beat the Devils for a third time this season last Thursday, ending a grueling three matches in three days schedule for the Lady Devils.

Lancaster traveled to Tappahannock last Tuesday to come from behind for a 3-2 win in the best of five series. After falling by two, 26-24, in an extra-point first set, LHS rallied for 25-23 and 25-11 wins. The Trojans overcame a 7-point deficit late in the game for a 25-22 win to tie the match at two sets each. The Lady Devils picked up a 15-13 win in the fifth set.

McKenzie Hathaway led the LHS servers with 12 aces, while Riley Molineaux had 26 assists. Frannie Wilson dominated at the net with 11 kills and Sydney Price got up for five blocks.

Lancaster avenged an early season loss to West Point last Wednesday, rallying from a 25-12 loss in the first set to win the match, 3-2. The Lady Devils picked up a 25-13 win in the second game, then fell by three in the third, 25-22, before claiming the fourth set, 25-19, and the fifth in extra points, 16-14.

Rachel Valdrighi led the servers with 20 serves for points, while Hathaway led the defense with 23 digs.
