LHS basketball team opens season with win over Mathews

Jay Dillon scored 14 points to lead three double-digit scorers last Friday as Lancaster’s varsity boys team opened the basketball season with a 71-48 win over Mathews.

Dillon did most of his work in the second quarter with eight of Lancaster’s 18 points. The Red Devils led by four after getting a three-pointer each from Dillon, Christian Sutton and Martez Davis.

The Red Devils opened up a six-point halftime lead to 16 after outscoring Mathews, 21-11, in the third. Dwayne Ball had the hot hands in the third, scoring eight points for LHS. He finished with 12. Davis also scored 12 in the game.

Lancaster scored 24 points from the cheap seats, sinking eight three-pointers in the outing.

The Devils will play host Christchurch School at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, December 9, in the first round of the John Stone Basketball Tournament. Play will continue Saturday, December 10, with a consolation game at 2 p.m. and the championship at 3:30 p.m.

In JV action, eleven different players scored for Lancaster in its season opening rout of Mathews, 68-15, last Friday night.

TJ Frisby led the LHS shooters with 13 points, scoring nine in the second half.

Eight shooters scored in an explosive first quarter for Lancaster when the Red Devils outscored the Blue Devils, 34-13. Lancaster led 44-13 at the half after shutting down the MHS offense in the second quarter. In fact, the Blue Devils never hit from the floor after the first quarter and went scoreless in the second and third quarters. The Blue Devils sank two free throws in the fourth.

BJ Lee added 10 points on the night for LHS and Tae Veney finished with eight.
