LHS track and field athletes show impressive season start

Lancaster’s track and fielders celebrated several personal bests, picked up a win, four seconds and a third at Christopher Newport University’s 33rd annual High School Captains Classic last Saturday.

Junior Darius Reed captured gold for the LHS boys team with a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles. He ran the race in 43.46.

Seniors Jasmyn Tomlin and Diamond Taylor led the Lady Devils. Tomlin, a sprinter, jumper and hurdler, was the runner-up in the triple jump with a 33’7.5″ jump and Taylor threw the shot 35’6″ for second in that event.

Tomlin also placed fourth with a 15’3″ long jump and fifth with a time of 57.08 in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Lady Devils 4X100-meter relay team finished second in 54.74 and the boys 4X800-meter team also placed second with a time of 8:47.53.

Senior Jervall Kelly led the LHS boys throwers, finishing third in the discus (117’3″) and sixth in the shot put (36’9.5″). Also throwing for the boys team this season will be sophomore Jy’kee Ball and Hezekiah Fauntleroy.

On the short track for the LHS boys team will be sprinters freshmen Jojuan Yarbrough, Cameron Towles, Xavier Sutton and Carlos Norris; sophomores Jaheem Blue, Benjamin Lee and Christopher Dameron, and senior Elijah Morris.

Running middle distance will be Reed, along with sophomores Dominique Veney and Marcus Keeve and senior Marcus Lee.

Leading the distance runners are senior returners Zac Benton and Wyatt McCranie, junior returners Kyle Bean and Will Parker and sophomore returner Zach Kane.

The Lady Devils’ have only four seniors on the 17-member team.

Taylor is the only thrower, while Tomlin leads the jumpers and hurdlers. Also sprinting and jumping this season are freshmen Demetria Carter and Tanasha Henderson and sophomores Unequia Green, Thomarrow Hardy and Nealasia Redmond. Redmond led the LHS speedsters last Saturday, finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.97. Henderson cleared 4’4″ to finish sixth in the high jump.

Running middle distance this season are senior returners Aniyah Waters and Monica Waddy, junior returner Alyssa Meadows and freshmen newcomers Hannah Wilmer, Olivia Rich, Virginia Demario, Sydney Price and Tara Gill.

Meadows, Price and Wilmer also will run hurdles.

Running the mile and two-mile are junior Leanne Nguyen and Mears Pollard. Pollard took seventh in the 3200 last Saturday with a time of 15:48.18 and Nguyen was eighth in the 1600 in 6:28.14.

Lancaster has two weeks off and will return to the track and field on April 20 at Middlesex.
