Lt. Col. Louis J. Hazel

REEDVILLE—Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Louis J. Hazel of Reedville passed away on January 23, 2018.

He was born in Pittsburgh and was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Hazel Sr., and Marie Baumbach Hazel; and his brother, Jack.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Labrenz); three sons, Gary, David and Keith; and his brothers Al and Tom.

After his graduation from Mount Lebanon High School in 1948, Louis enlisted in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1952, after which he proudly served his country for 21 years with tours of duty at Fort Devens, Mass., and in Japan, Germany and Turkey, and finally at the Pentagon.

After his retirement from the military, he continued his career at the Pentagon as a civilian employee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

A private memorial for family and friends will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 656, Burgess, VA 22432; or to the Northumberland County Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 1, Reedville, VA 22539.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
