Mary A. C. Haynie

SANDY SPRING, MD.—Mary Allene Clarke Haynie, 86, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

Allene was a resident at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring, Md., and was surrounded by family when she went to heaven.

Her husband of 56 years, Walter Garner Haynie had predeceased her in 2007. They were high school sweethearts, both having attended and graduated from Lively High School. Allene graduated with the class of 1949. She was born and raised in Somer, and was one of seven children in the Clarke family, all who have predeceased her. Anyone remembering her knows how much love Allene had and gave her family.

Allene is survived by her son, Walter Ronald “Ron” Haynie and his wife, Marcy Jo Haynie, of Gaithersburg, Md.; four grandchildren, Thomas and Stephen Haynie, Rebecca and husband Christopher “Chris” Montanti, and John and wife Marina Haynie; two step-grandchildren, Jacob Asher and Nicole and husband Abram “Abe” Griffiths; seven great-grandchildren; Tyler Dorman, Genevieve, Anthony, Giuliana, and Francesca Montanti, and Avary and Rylee Griffiths; and many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from high school, Allene moved to Baltimore to attend business college where she earned a degree. She and Walter were married in 1951. Allene became a mother to “Ronnie” in 1954 and then spent seven years as a nursery school teacher.

Allene and Walter moved to Silver Spring in 1965. Allene was a school crossing guard until she and Walter moved back to Lively in 1977. She worked for Dr. Gravatt in Kilmarnock for over 20 years.

Allene was always known as pleasant, caring and loving to all who met her and knew her. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Callao, and also attended services at Lebanon Baptist Church in Alfonso in later years. She read her Bible and scripture daily, loved God, music, friends, all of her family, but most of all Walter—for whom she cared for through his long illness—and she enjoyed any kind of dessert and ice cream. If there was ever an angel on earth it was Allene.

A celebration of Allene’s life will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, October 26, at Lebanon Baptist Church in Alfonso. The family will receive guests from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery with a social gathering in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations be made to Friends House Retirement Community, 17340 Quaker Lane, Sandy Spring, MD 20860 ATTN: Patti Reed (their dementia unit provided unwavering care for Allene); or Lebanon Baptist Church, 1712 Lara Road, Lancaster, VA 22503.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
