Second-place Northumberland upset top-seeded Washington & Lee, 3-1, in Montross last Thursday to win the Northern Neck District tournament championship.
Washington & Lee (17-4, 9-1), as the regular season district champion and number four region seed, received a first-round bye in this week’s Class 1 Region A tournament. The Lady Eagles will play the winner of a Chincoteague versus Colonial Beach first-round game. Northumberland, as the number nine seed, traveled to eighth-ranked Surry for a first round game. The winner of that game would play first-place Mathews in a quarterfinal game.
