Pianist sets master class, concert May 13

Lynne Mackey

Get ready for romance, but also a little nod to motherhood when pianist Lynne Mackey returns to Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury for her piano forum and concert Saturday, May 13.

Mackey has performed solo recitals, concertos and chamber music and she has given master classes in the U.S., Brazil, Morocco and Europe. She has performed and worked with RWC pianists several times over the years–too many times to remember.

“The Romantic Spirit” is the theme for her solo piano recital at 4 p.m. at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington. She will play music of composers Frédéric Chopin, Johannes Brahms and Sergei Rachmaninoff. A highlight of the recital is the Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel, by Johannes Brahms.

Mackey’s performance is underwritten in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

“I will also play something to commemorate Mother’s Day,” Mackey said. “I selected ‘Changes’ by Canadian composer Alexina Louie, to examine what it’s like to be a mother and hold up a musical career as well.”

She will present a piano forum master class for pianists and music lovers at 10 a.m.

“I try to get together with some of the residents who play piano or have had a lot of involvement in music,” Mackey said. “Some people may wish to play, but others simply enjoy relating experiences they’ve had. We always get a nice mix of people—some who play by ear and some who have studied piano.”

To attend the forum or the recital, sign up at the front desk or call 438-4000.
