Ray H. Hargett

Ray H. Hargett

KILMARNOCK—Ray Howard Hargett passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on September 8, 1936, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to Louise and Vyron Hargett and attended City High School. He went on to Georgia Tech and Georgia State, where he graduated with a degree in business administration. Ray worked as an executive for a number of large medical firms and rounded out a successful career in 1983.

After encouragement from local friends, Ray relocated his family to the Northern Neck. Employed locally with Chesapeake Bank, Ray started the bank’s mortgage lending operation which resulted in home ownership in our region for hundreds of families.

Chesapeake Bank was like family to Ray and he overwhelmingly cherished his years there until his retirement from the role of senior vice president in 2001. While at Chesapeake, Ray served on the board of directors of the Virginia Bankers Association Product & Services Corporation and was active in his local chamber.

Ray loved doting on his wife of 46 years, Sandra. He found joy in cooking for her and always looked forward to their time together after work.

Ray enjoyed golf, his view of the Chesapeake Bay and all things in his beloved Northern Neck. He especially enjoyed walks and an occasional treat with his dog Zach. His favorites included peanut butter, a good scotch, barbecue and the ramblin’ wreck from Georgia Tech. He always enjoyed his local buddies and their boys night out.

Ray is survived by his wonderful wife, Sandra. He is also survived by his five children and their spouses; Steve Hargett and his wife, Lisa, Jeff Hargett, Rob Hargett and his wife, Gloria, Lynne Hargett Rooks and her husband, Jack, and Dan Hargett and his wife, Kelly; his 11 grandchildren, Erica, Tyler, Addie, Olivia, Emory, Isabella, Hadley, Emma, Chloe, Coleman, Lauren and her husband, Jacob; one great-grandchild, Owen; and three step-grandchildren, Wesley, Katie and Connor.  He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Phillips and her husband, Steve, and Sarah O’Neal and her husband, Jim.

Ray measured his success by the successes of his children and grandchildren. He was an immensely proud father and loved his family to no end. Ray’s quick wit and sense of humor will be forever missed but never forgotten. His spark will live on through the words and funny sayings we all adored.

Ray’s spirit will be with us on Saturday June 9, 2018 at 1 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Kilmarnock, with a celebration of his life to follow at Indian Creek Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Chesapeake Academy, Post Office Box 8, Irvington VA 22480; or Christchurch School, 49 Seahorse Lane, Christchurch, VA 23031.

Arrangements were handled by Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
