The Richard Henry Lee (RHL) chapter of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (VASSAR) recently announced contests for area youngsters for the academic year 2018-19.
The winner of the RHL contests will be asked to represent RHL in the VASSAR contest, most all in February 2019, reported Don Smith. The winner of the VASSAR contests will be asked to represent Virginia in the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) in June 2019. Winners of all the contests will receive scholarships.
Competition will include:
• The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. The NSSAR invites all students in grades 9-12 interested in the American Revolution to participate in the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. The contest is open to home-school students as well as those enrolled in public, parochial, or private high schools.
The applicant will be expected to present an oration based on an original composition, of not less than five minutes or more than six minutes in duration. The applicant must submit the original manuscript but the oration must be given from memory and without the use of notes or any kind of props…
