HENRICO—Samuel Randolph Brent, 88, of Henrico passed away September 6, 2018, at Retreat Hospital Hospice Unit, Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Walker Brent; and mother, Dorothy Ashburn Brent; sister, Louise Brent Haynie (Warner); brother, James Walker Brent (Jeanette); and beloved wife of 53 years, Hazel Wyatt Brent.
He is survived by nephews, George Brent Williams (Adeline), David James Brent, Wayne Samuel Brent (Liz); nieces, Barbara T. Smith (Stewart) and Shirley Williams; four great-nephews; five great-nieces; and 11 great-great-nephews and nieces.
Sam was born in Kilmarnock. After graduating from Kilmarnock School, he enlisted in the Army on August 4, 1948, and was assigned to HQ Co 1st Cav Div. He was honorably discharged on June 12, 1952, as an SFC with a Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Occupational Medal (Japan), and a Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars.
Upon returning from the service, he worked a short time for Metropolitan Insurance Company. He then worked as a trust officer for First & Merchants Bank and then worked as a vice president and trust officer for Signet Bank.
He and his wife were members of First Baptist Church in Richmond. After retirement, Sam became a Master Gardner and rooted thousands of English boxwoods that he grew and sold. His additional leisure time was spent working on his home on Fleet’s Island, White Stone.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish.
A funeral ceremony was held at 10:15 a.m. Monday, September 10, at Bliley’s-Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, followed by interment at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to The Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
