Supervisors approve road improvement plan

by Madison White Franks

LANCASTER—Following public hearings on May 31, the Lancaster board of supervisors approved a secondary road plan and set a proposed $33.4 million 2018-19 general fund budget for adoption on June 28.

Virginia Department of Transportation Northern Neck residency administrator Steve McKeever informed the board of the Secondary Six-Year-Plan and related construction budget for fiscal year 2019.

The budget is $39,222 for 2019 and for the span of six years totals $236,482, said McKeever.

In the first year of the plan, VDOT will pursue improvement projects on Hudnall Lane, Green Road and Norris Road. The roads to be considered in upcoming years include Oliver Lane, Chestnut Grove, Butter, Davis Mill, Bunker Hill, Field Trail and River Ridge roads, as well as Burrell Lane, Gilbert Street, Hawthorne Avenue and Kenner Drive.

District 3 supervisor Jason Bellows introduced a motion to approve the plan, which passed 3-2 with support from District 2 supervisor Ernest Palin, District 4 supervisor and chairman Bill Lee and Bellows. District 1 supervisor Jack Larson and District 5 supervisor Robert Westbrook voted against the motion because of discussions related to the intersection at James B. Jones Memorial Highway and Mary Ball Road, although this plan was only for secondary unpaved routes. At the April board meeting, Westbrook addressed concerns about trucks running onto the curb at the corner next to Walgreen’s and asked McKeever what could be done to fix it….
