Virginia’s Li’l Ole Opry returns for 42nd season

Virginia’s Li’l Ole Opry will open its 42nd season of country music shows Saturday, April 29, with an “All Star Opry” featuring the house band, Shades of Country and all of the Opry singers.

The group will perform at Mathews High School’s 750-seat auditorium, 9889 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m.

“Last year after Donk’s Theater collapsed, our community and friends were so generous and supportive,” said Opry representative Lynda Smith. “We have been overwhelmed with their kindness and this year, we wanted to do something to give back and say thanks.”

To that end, ticket prices have been lowered to $12 for all adults and $5 for ages 12 and younger.

“We hope more people will be able to come and enjoy our shows,” said Smith.

Fans also can win tickets to each show by listening to WIGO Country (104.9 FM) and WXGM (Xtra 99.1 FM). Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Mathews Visitor Center and Beach Bum BBQ in Mathews and Marketplace Antiques in Hayes. Tickets are available at the door on show night.

On May 6, featured performers will be Ralph Motley, Lynda Smith, Tracy Hill, LeighAnn Abbott, Richard Smith, AJ McKeen, Jeff Long, Susan and Betsy Ripley, David Shuber, Sam Hogge, Tab Warwick, Phil Johnson and fiddler Mike Gregg.
