‘Accidental fire’ destroys Charter House facility

KILMARNOCK—A New Year’s Eve fire that destroyed the walls and floor of Charter House didn’t destroy the structure’s heart.

“We are more than a building,” said Charter House coordinator Kelli Jones. “We want to get out a message of hope that we’re not going anywhere. We’re committed to having a strong program and we’re going to continue to be here for the people who need us.”

When Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) engine and ladder trucks responded to a 911 call at 4:35 p.m. December 31 at Charter House, 528 South Main Street, Kilmarnock, the rear of the building was fully engulfed, according to Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) director Matthew Smith.
