The Robert O. Norris Jr. Memorial Bridge in White Stone and the Downing Bridge in Tappahannock are both closed until further notice.

“This is unprecedented,” said VDOT communications manager Kelly Hannon.

The Norris bridge was closed around mid-morning Friday due to high winds. The winds caused a tractor-trailer to crash and lodge into the bridge’s side railings. Hannon said it cannot be moved until the winds die down.

The Downing Bridge closed early Friday afternoon after a vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer.

Both bridges are expected to remain closed through the night. Motorists are being directed to cross the Rappahannock River at Route 30l at Port Royal.
