Face coverings now optional in Northumberland school buildings

CLARAVILLE—Northumberland students now have a choice when it comes to wearing masks inside school buildings.

At a special called meeting on Thursday, January 27, the school board opted to follow Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s recent “Executive Order #2,” which allows for flexibility regarding student mask requirements in school buildings.

The school board adopted its new policy, 3-2. Members Dana O’Bier, Betty Christopher and Cheryl Davis voted in favor of making masks optional; Denise Mazyck and Gayle Sterrett voted against.

Gov. Youngkin’s order required schools to institute volunteer masking by January 24. Several nearby school boards have defied the order and….
