James T. Futrell Jr.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—James T. Futrell Jr., 81, passed away at Heritage Place Assisted living in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 15, 2017.

Jim was born on January 19, 1936, in Ithaca, N.Y., to the late Susan Copeland and James Thomas Futrell.

He was preceded in death by grandson Phillip James Carson and his beloved dogs, Pudgy, Sport, Erika, Brownie, Smokey, Heidi and Sidney.

Jim served in the North Carolina Air National Guard for six years; graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his bachelor’s and from the University of Virginia for his master’s. He spent most of his career working as a guidance director at Rappahannock County High School in Rappahannock, retiring in 1999.

Jim was a beloved husband, dad, granddad, brother, son and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Livengood Futrell of the home; daughter, Mary Katherine “Kathy” Carson and husband, David, of Fayetteville; son, James Thomas Futrell III and wife, LaTisha, of Orange; sisters, Jan F. Young and husband, William, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Judy F. Coltrane and husband, Glenn, of Virginia Beach, and Eileen F. McNeill of Jamestown, N.C.; grandchildren, Zachary B. Carson, Adam M. Carson and Jacob T. Carson; step-granddaughters Cherokee Sharpe, BreAnn Sharpe, and Dallas Owens; and dog, Buddy Futrell.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, December 23, at Jernigan Warren Chapel. Burial will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home on Saturday.
