Jane E. C. Mitchell

Jane E. C. Mitchell

BEDFORD, NY—Jane Ellen Cunningham Mitchell, 74, of Bedford, New York, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Jane was born on June 8, 1950 to Dr. James Cunningham and Mrs. Ann Cunningham of White Stone. She was born at Guantanamo Bay US Naval facility where her grandfather, Captain Leonard Wilson, was chief medical officer.

Her early childhood years gave her rich memories of Europe, as her father, a Navy medical officer, her mother and their young family were stationed abroad. Following her father’s retirement, the family settled in White Stone, where Jane attended and graduated from Lancaster High School and where she made deep bonds with others in the community that she drew upon the rest of her life.

Jane attended college at Virginia Intermont College and later pursued art at Virginia Commonwealth University. Jane married John Wylie Mitchell and moved to Bedford, where she lived and raised her two children for over 50 years. Inspired by her deep love of family and natural beauty, she continued her drawings and photographic creations which stood out to many as both beautifully unique and inspirational.

The love of her life were her two children, Amanda M. Self and Brooks W. Mitchell, who were at her side holding her hand through her last moments. She fought a very long and very private battle with cancer.

She is survived by them; her husband, John W. Mitchell; her brothers, James L. Cunningham and Robert L. Cunningham; her aunt, cousins, nephews, son-in-law and grandchildren, all of whom she loved and cherished immensely.

No immediate service is planned at this time.
