Kilmarnock man perishes in crash

RICHMOND—A Kilmarnock man died following a traffic accident Monday, April 12, in Hanover County, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).

At 9:14 a.m., VSP responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of I-295 near the 37 mile marker, Mechanicsville Turnpike, reported VSP public relations coordinator Shelby Crouch.

A 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling north on I-295. Due to a tire blowout, the Mercury was traveling at a low speed. The Mercury was then struck in the rear by a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. After striking the Mercury, the truck traveled into the median and struck a tree.

Due to the impact of the crash, the Mercury traveled into the right lane, coming to rest sideways in the lane.

The driver of the Mercury, Julian A. “Tony” Ritch, 60, of Kilmarnock died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Dodge, Juan R. Sanabia, 29, of Bethesda, Md., was transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

No charges were filed in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
