The Red Devils pushed through rain, mud and a cold breeze to find success at the finish line in the Class 1 boys and girls cross country races last Friday at Great Meadows Event Park in The Plains.
Lancaster High senior Domonique Veney finished fourth in the boys state race and freshman Hailey Smith placed sixth in the girls meet. Lancaster had six of its 14 runners finish with a personal record (PR).
“It was a nice ending to a great season with a super group of kids,” said LHS coach Joanne Webb-Fary.
Lancaster sent both its boys and girls teams to the state meet for the first time since 2014.
Auburn High School ran away with both titles winning the girls and boys state championships. Auburn’s boys team scored a team low 69 points with three runners in the top 15 and its girls team scored a low 40 points with all five scorers in the top 15. The best Region A team finisher was Mathews, which placed third in the boys meet with 78 points and fourth in the girls meet with 127 points.
Lancaster was eighth in the boys meet with 216 points and ninth in the girls meet with 241 points.
