LHS fields a full varsity soccer roster

After the first full week of the season, the Lancaster High School varsity soccer team is off to a 1-2 start.

The Red Devils lost a season opener, 6-4, to Middlesex then rebounded to pick up a 3-2 win over Mathews before suffering an 8-0 shutout against the Eastern Shore’s Northampton.

Coach Rob Pittman and assistant Mark Landon fill a full roster of four seniors, five juniors, eight sophomores and six freshmen. LHS did not have enough players to have both varsity and junior varsity teams this year. Instead, the younger players are getting a season of practice and will play a few JV matches.

“I always said I would never make cuts,” said Pittman. “I’m always going to encourage kids to play, so I’d rather keep everybody. I’m just happy we’re going to get a few JV games in for them.”

Eighth graders Scott Randall and Nathan Reganon will join the younger varsity players for the JV matches.

In the early season outings, returning forward Michael Foulkes and midfielder Stewart Hollingsworth have emerged as Lancaster’s leading scorers.

Junior newcomer at forward Andrew Fulmer scored Lancaster’s first goal of the season against Middlesex on a pass from Foulkes. Foulkes then scored unassisted to pull Lancaster within one, 3-2, at the half. Hollingsworth scored both of Lancaster’s second half goals, one unassisted and the other on a penalty kick in the final two minutes…
