On a recent windy day, just before school ended for summer break, more than 250 first, second, third and fourth graders filed out of the Lancaster Primary School (LPS) with smiles and books in hand.
Each child carried or waved or read a book that they personally chose to take home and read during their summer break, said Jill Sears, director of marketing and development at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck (BGCNN). All books had been screened for the quality of the reading experience and for the enjoyment of the youth.
