Northumberland students assist  with Free Tire Disposal Day event

Northumberland students help load some tires onto a truck during the recent Free Tire Disposal Day.

On Saturday, April 29, Northumberland County Public School students and volunteers from the Northumberland Anti-Litter Committee hosted a Free Tire Disposal Day.

The event was the first of its kind to take place in Northumberland, and was made possible by a generous grant from the River Counties Community Foundation.

The Free Tire Disposal Day was a great success as students and volunteers collected a total of 520 tires. Some 76 cars dropped off the tires at Northumberland Middle School for recycling. Volunteers unloaded tires from vehicles, and then loaded them into a trailer, where the tires will be taken to a facility for proper disposal and recycling. Typically, there is a charge for disposing of tires, and for that reason many end up abandoned or dumped in the woods, rivers or the Chesapeake Bay.
