The YMCA Camp Kekoka Polar Bear Plunge is only a few weeks away. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon January 27 at YMCA/APYC Camp Kekoka, 1083 Boys Camp Road, Kilmarnock.

This week, Anne Paparella of Lancaster By the Bay Chamber, Bruce Brizzi of Northern Neck Insurance and Alice Cooper of Lancaster Community Library have joined together as the KIWS Rotary Super Heroes Team. They have challenged Chesapeake Bank to form a team and join the plunge, reported camp executive Cassie Leichty.

The team/business that brings in the most sponsorships gets the coveted plunger medal and their name will be placed on the coveted plunger trophy, said Leichty.

“Who will be challenged next?” she asks.

Leichty said the polar bear plunge has been evolving over the past eight years and is turning out to be the signature event for YMCA Camp Kekoka. It has brave participants of all ages plunging into the frigid waters of Indian Creek to raise money to ensure every child gets to experience a week of Camp Kekoka, regardless of their ability to pay.

After the plunge, plungers and sponsors are invited to warm up with hot soup, hot chocolate and other assorted goodies while they enjoy a fun awards ceremony, she said.

Plungers are requested to raise at least $100 through sponsorships among family, friends and co-workers. To register to plunge or to sponsor a plunger, go to ymcacampkekoka.org, or call Leichty, 435-3616.
