IRVINGTON—Chief Gabriel Spears of the Confederated Tribes of the Wicocomico Indian Nation spoke about the history of the tribes and his efforts to gain state recognition during a visit to Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury on Monday, June 23.
Three tribes—Cuttatawomen, Chicacoan and Wicocomico—make up the nation which held 4,400 acres in Northumberland and Lancaster counties before the land was stripped from them upon the death of William Taptico II, “King of the Wicocomico,” around 1719.
Spears said he also is looking to contact descendants of the nation, those with names like Tapp, Pinn and Doggett. “It’s important for us to speak….
