Red Devils slug it to the semifinals

Lancaster High School baseball Coach Welby Saunders put his own spin on a famous quote, saying “It’s how you finish, not how you start.”

Well, despite losing 5-0 to eventual Class 1 runner-up Auburn on Friday, June 9, in Salem, the Red Devils finished pretty darn good…riding a 12-game winning streak through the latter part of the season to finish as a state tournament semifinalist and the Region 1A and Northern Neck District champions.

And despite finishing a game shy of the state final and that elusive championship trophy, the Devils checked a lot off of their to-do list this season.

“It took a lot of heart for our team to get where we were,” said senior pitcher and outfielder Eli Pittman. “We beat every single team that had beat us earlier, and that felt really nice to do that. We did a lot of good things at the end. And we definitely had fun.”

The Devils capped a 19-7 season in the state semifinal….
