School board recognizes Dr. Davis, hears student perspective on virtual instruction and grading alternative

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland school board on Monday, December 14, recognized the contributions of outgoing member Dr. Cheryl Brown Davis.

“I’m really sorry we couldn’t be with you in person,” said superintendent Dr. Holly Wargo. The board meeting was held electronically due to the COVID-19 related closure of school buildings on Thursday, December 10. “You brought years of experience and education to our board not only as a teacher but a leader. We will certainly miss you. The words ‘thank you’ don’t express our gratitude.”

Davis was appointed to the board in April 2020 to finish out the term of District 2 member Mary Hooper, who died March 6. Carl Perez was elected to the seat when he ran unopposed in November’s special election.

Board chairman Betty Christopher also thanked Davis for coming on in the middle of the year and “doing an excellent job. We thank you for all you have done for Northumberland County schools.”

Davis said it was “a blessing” to have served and hoped “that our paths will cross again.”

Following a closed session to discuss personnel and candidates, the board appointed and welcomed Dawn C. Taylor as assistant principal of Northumberland Middle School. Prior to the appointment, Taylor had been…
