Some schools are opting out of winter sports competition

Northern Neck District’s Washington & Lee and Essex have joined many other school divisions across the state in opting out of winter sports participation.

The Westmoreland school board, on the recommendation of superintendent Dr. Michael Perry, voted not to participate in winter sports at its meeting on November 16. The Essex school board followed suit on November 23, joining Richmond City and Williamsburg schools, along with others in southeast Virginia. 

As of press time at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond County and Colonial Beach schools have not changed plans to participate.
