Football fans will get a chance to cheer on Lancaster and Northumberland counties’ youngest players Saturday, September 29, when the White Stone Coyotes youth football team hosts Richmond County at Lancaster High School.
The junior varsity Coyotes team of 7 to 9 year olds will play at 9:30 a.m. and the varsity Coyotes team of 10 to 12 year olds will play at 11 a.m.
Andy Wylie started the White Stone Coyotes this fall after assisting with the Richmond County team last season. Wylie, who coached a youth team when his son was younger, said he wanted to give the area’s young football players an opportunity to learn and play the sport.
He requested use of the fields behind the old White Stone Volunteer Fire Department as a practice facility on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Wylie also approached the Northern Neck and Northumberland Family YMCAs for equipment.
“I knew they had football equipment from when they had a program. They [both] donated without hesitation,” said Wylie. “Then we were off and running from there.”
The Coyotes field 39 boys and girls. Chyna Wormley is the starting JV quarterback and inside linebacker.
“[Chyna] has earned the respect of every athlete and coach in the program,” said Wylie. “We are super proud of her and all her accomplishments on and off the field.”
The JV and varsity Coyotes’ teams started practice July 31 and played their first games September 1. The Coyotes play an eight-game regular season schedule against teams from Essex, King George, Colonial Beach, Richmond County and Westmoreland.
The varsity team includes Khayleb Williams, Kaiden Wilson, Trayven Wormley, Zaden Veney, Camron Carlson, Jaden Crockett, Brady Vanlandingham, Isaiah Mintor, Kyjeir Betts, Jasir Smith, Jamarcus Russell, Arthur Bowers, Dreamier Bromley, Derrion Cockrell, Dontay Kelly, Noah Benson and Treshawn Morris.
