HEATHSVILLE—During a Thursday, February 13, meeting of the Northumberland board of supervisors, members of the boating public urged the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to address a water hazard near the remnants of the Great Wicomico River Lighthouse, removed in 2015.
According to a presentation made by Wayne Young, a retired Coast Guard member with experience in aids to navigation, the 60-foot diameter rock pile was originally installed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service to protect the Great Wicomico River Lighthouse from ice. It rises 10-12 feet off the bottom, which is just below the surface during mean low water, causing problems for even experienced boaters.
