Brookvale: Honoring the pursuit of excellence

Over 100 proud alumni and community members gathered Saturday, October 4, to remember Brookvale High School with the unveiling of a Virginia Highway Marker. The marker is on Devils Bottom Road, near the former high school which most recently was Lancaster Primary School.

Pixie E. Curry, chairman of the Save Brookvale History Committee, said that while the halls were no longer filled with the sounds of school bells or students, “they will always be in our hearts.”

Guest speaker Frank Thornton, Brookvale’s former Latin and French teacher, urged “each of us to do our part to improve ourselves, our family, our friends and our community.”

While Brookvale’s time was short—built in 1959 and closed in 1969 after the county desegregated its schools—its effects have lasted for….
