Franklin G. Callis

Franklin G. Callis

LANCASTER—It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Franklin Guss Callis, 83, on February 24, 2025, in Lancaster.

Born on March 11, 1941, in Ottoman, Frank spent his life deeply connected to the land and water that surrounded him.

At the age of 17, Frank joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and adventure. Following his service, he built a career at Dahlgren Naval Base, dedicating years of hard work before eventually retiring. However, retirement did not slow him down—he returned to his lifelong passion for crabbing until the age of 80.

Frank was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had an enduring love for his family, friends, and the outdoors, spending countless hours fishing, crabbing, and gardening. His deep appreciation for history and politics made him a tremendous story teller, always ready to share his knowledge with those around him.

He was affectionately known as “Pop Frank” by his grandchildren, who enjoyed hearing his version of the good old days in the Northern Neck. Whether recounting tales of early morning fishing adventures or sharing wisdom about crabbing and life on the water, he captivated family and friends alike. He grew up learning the ways of a waterman from his father and carried that legacy throughout his life. The rhythm of the tides and the pull of a crab pot were second nature to him.

Frank is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Bath County); his children, Darel Callis and daughter-in-law Donna Callis and Nicole Callis Sanford and son-in-law Bill Sanford; and his cherished grandchildren—Tristen and Collin Callis, and Gus and Amelia Sanford. He also leaves behind his sister, Dot Coates.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas “Captain Mochie” Callis and Clara Callis; his sisters, Thelma Saunders and Joanne Reynolds; and his brother James E. “Pluck” Callis.

His presence will be deeply missed not only by family but also by dear friends who shared in his love for the water and crabs. A special thank you goes out to Melvin, Cordie, and all of Frank’s neighborhood crew for their unwavering love and support over the years.

Frank’s beloved dogs, Dora and Smiley, will miss him tremendously.

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held later this spring.

His spirit will live on in every cast of the line and every pull of a crab pot. May he forever rest peacefully, surrounded by the waters he loved so dearly.

Frank was a faithful supporter of the SPCA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck in his name.
