HEATHSVILLE—At a recent joint meeting among Northumberland supervisors and school board members, board of supervisors chairman Richard Haynie said the ongoing financial issues of the county, “particularly of the schools,” need to be addressed “out of the concern for the needs of our students, teachers and families.”
The joint meeting was the next step for the county in possibly taking over the school division’s troubled finances.
Haynie presented slides detailing a history of financial issues at the school, the county audit findings and current issues. Among them are a failure of the school to “follow basic but necessary bookkeeping procedures,” overspending what was approved by supervisors, failing to enforce existing policies and procedures, and failing to keep proper documentation.
