The outlook for abandoned dogs and cats in the Northern Neck is grim.
Overwhelmed and underfunded public animal shelters, confronting a rising number of homeless pets, are often unable to provide the nurturing environment that traumatized dogs and cats need, reported Lincoln Boykin of the River Counties Community Foundation. Many animals are euthanized.
However, these animals will have a new option soon, he said. After 10 years on the drawing board, a privately owned no-kill shelter and adoption center broke ground in August 2024. The nonprofit Northern Neck Partners for Pets estimates the 4,500-square-foot shelter in Lancaster County will open for 20 dogs and 40 cats in the spring.
