Town council focuses on administrative issues

KILMARNOCK—In its first meeting of the year, the Kilmarnock Town Council welcomed a new member, appointed a new vice mayor and a new liaison to the planning commission.

Matt Cunningham was appointed to council earlier this month to fill a vacancy until an election can be held to pick a replacement to fill the unexpired term.

Additionally, Curtis Smith requested to step down from his role as vice mayor.

During an administration and finance committee report, council member Mike Bedell nominated Rebecca Nunn to serve as vice mayor. Council member Mae Umphlett seconded the motion; however, the motion failed 2-3 as Bedell and Nunn voted in favor and council members Alice Cooper, Umphlett and Cunningham voted against.

Cooper nominated Umphlett to serve as vice mayor with Cunningham seconding. The motion passed, 3-2, as Cooper, Umphlett and Cunningham voted in favor….
