KILMARNOCK—Winter Harold “Winnie” McCrobie Jr. was born on January 28, 1953, at home in Kilmarnock. He was the only child of Winter H. “Shorty” McCrobie Sr. and Beverely Hastings “Bobbie” McCrobie.
Winnie passed from this world to his heavenly home on September 13, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond with his wife by his side.
Winnie was educated in Lancaster County Schools graduating in 1973, and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in 1975.
Winnie taught music first at York Academy, Huguenot Academy in Powhatan and then returned to his home community teaching at Northumberland Middle School for 27 years.
Winnie married Lynn “Lynnie” Jackson in 1976 and Jonathan joined the family in 1981.
Winnie loved music of any kind. He could be found on his drums with the Chesapeake Chorale, The Northern Neck Orchestra or Nouvelet, but his true joy was the years he played in Jumbo Lumb Daddy and the Backfin Boys.
Winnie was a faithful dedicated member of Kilmarnock Baptist Church where he played and sang in the Praise Band, sang and directed the Sanctuary choir, served as Sunday school superintendent, taught Sunday school, and was treasurer of the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Winnie loved the years he coached Jonathan in baseball at Dream Fields. He also followed his father into service in the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department.
Winnie’s memory lives on in his wife of 48 years; his son; his two grandsons, Jameson and Kendrick; his father-in-law, Jimmie Jackson; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; his cousins; a huge bunch of great nephews and nieces; and his lifelong friend, Mal Ransone; as well as many students and friends.
A memorial service followed by a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. October 18 at Hills Quarter Club House. Memorial gifts may be made to Kilmarnock Baptist Church, Lancaster Northumberland Habitat for Humanity or a charity of your choice.
