WEEMS—Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Friday, May 15, at Irvington and Christ Church roads in Weems.

At 11:47 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the scene of the crash, reported VSP Division 1 public information officer Sgt. Jessica B. Shehan.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 SUV, driven by Jeffrey William Cole, 71, of Fairfax County, was traveling across the intersection from Christ Church to New Salem roads when it failed to yield the right of way at the four-way stop intersection and was struck by a southbound 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 operated by Richard Scott Anderson, 46, of Lancaster County, said Sgt. Shehan.

Cole was transported to Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, she said. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Anderson was not injured in the crash and also was wearing a seatbelt. A passenger in the Mercedes-Benz was not injured.

Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash, said Sgt. Shehan. No charges have been placed at this time and the crash remains under investigation.
