Ahead of the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta October 3-5, we approached our two commodores—Ollen Richey of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club and Jonathon Truwit of the Yankee Point Yacht Club—to get their impressions for this upcoming event, the 30th in the long-running successful regatta series in support of our local hospice services.
And competition! Each man wants his club to win the best yacht club award! Here is a recap of the conversations.
What’s the history behind this regatta? Well, it was started by two sailors, John McConnico and his friend Chuck Harney, at Yankee Point in 1989 as a race for classic-design sailboats and was called a Turkey Shoot from inception as it was initially held over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was moved to early October to attract more racers due to warmer weather and separation from a major holiday.
