LHS attendance improves; block scheduling explained

LANCASTER—Lancaster High School principal Mike Myers on Monday, May 18, told the school board that attendance had greatly improved over the past two years.

Lancaster celebrated Teachers and Staff Members of the Year at the Monday, May 18, school board meeting. At Lancaster Elementary, school counselor Heidi Lally and second grade teacher Krista Maynard were selected. The high school recognized JROTC instructor Lt. Col. Ronald McManus and registrar Sarah Pittman. McManus and Pittman also were selected as Teacher and Staff Members of the Year for the division. From left are Lally, Maynard, McManus and Pittman. The school division also said goodbye to two long-term employees. Retiring this year are Lori Campbell, instructional assistant at the Early Childhood Education Center, 26 years of service; and Donna Wilkins, career and technical education teacher, 30 years of service. Chronic absenteeism, missing more than 10% of the school year, “is a national problem. Two years ago we were 33%. Last year, we reduced it to 24% and right now, we’re at 18%,” said Myers.

The new School Performance and Support Framework calls for chronic absenteeism to be 10% or less as….
