VMRC authorizes Little Wicomico dredging project

FORT MONROE—The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) on Tuesday, June 23, unanimously approved the maintenance dredging of the Little Wicomico River at the Smith Point Inlet. This action follows a February vote by the commission to provide $2.6 million for the project.

Plans call for the dredging of 22,700 cubic yards of material to a depth of minus 10 feet mean low water. The sandy material will be placed along the shoreline immediately downstream of the Smith Point Inlet.

Staff recommended approval of the project “with our standard dredge permit conditions and contingent upon the submittal of final drawings that specifically detail the placement methodology of the sandy material,” said VMRC deputy chief of habitat management Justin Worrell.

No one spoke in opposition to the project.
