Lancaster supervisors address county traffic issues

LANCASTER—In an effort to improve traffic flow and safety at a number of key areas in the county, Lancaster supervisors on Thursday, June 25, asked the Virginia Department of Transportation to conduct speed studies on Windmill Point Road and Irvington Road and to apply for Smart Scale funding for projects in Kilmarnock.

During public input, Fleets Island resident Travis Willow, speaking “with the support of the vast majority of homeowners of Fleets Island and the sheriff of Lancaster County,” asked supervisors to conduct a speed study “in the hopes of having the speed limit reduced.” Currently, Windmill Point Road has a 45 mph zone from Foxwells to Fleets Island, just past the Oyster Creek Bridge. Continuing towards the beach, the road is unposted, so the speed limit is 55 mph until Bay Water Drive where it is 25 mph.
